Aviva Premiership Game Changer of the Season: Gonzalo Camacho

Pumas wingers Horacio Agulla and Gonzalo Camacho have left a massive mark on English rugby this season with the World Cup 11 and 14 winning awards at the Aviva Premiership Rugby Awards held earlier tonight at the London Hilton in Park Lane, London, England. Agulla was included in the Dream Team, picked as the best right winger of the season. Camacho won the award for Game Changer of the season . The award is based on a points system which rewards players for the most effective performances each month according to the Opta index. The Argentine pair are certainties for the upcoming internationals vs Italy and France next month. Camacho´s season in England is over following the elimination of his club, the Exeter Chiefs who finished fifth to qualify for the Heineken Cup but missed out on making the Semi Finals of the Aviva Premiership. Agulla´s club, the Leicester Tigers will play in the Semi Finals vs Saracens on Saturday in a home match at Welford Road.

No to be left outdone the USA was also a winner with secondrower, Samu Manoa named in the dream team of the season. Manoa´s club, the Northampton Saints, will play against the Harlequins in the other Semi Final. the match will be played at the Stoop in London. The Califonian forward is certain to return to international duty for the USA Eagles afgter missing out on a place at the World Cup last year due to issues with his contract. He has since signed a long term deal and will be avaliable for his country in June.

What to do with Five Inform Wingers?

Horacio Agulla is in the form of his life this season with the Leicester Tigers. He has won the Player of the Month award twice and in addition to scoring six tries he has also been involved in creating others as he has been frequently going off his wing to be used to create options through the centres. Agulla is a working winger much more than being a finisher which explains why he has scored only four tries in his 34 test appearances for Argentina. Still aged only 27, Agulla is Argentina´s most experienced outside back and in 2009 was used as Argentina´s starting fullback. He made his debut as a 21 year old in 2005 vs Samoa.

Lucas González Amorosino scored the try of the World Cup last year to break Scottish hearts and has gone on to play outstanding rugby this season for Montpellier. His try vs Biarritz in his third game for the club set the tone for the rest of the season. Since the World Cup González Amorosino has played fifteen Top 14 matches and three Heineken Cup matches. He began the season on the right wing but has played every match since then at fullback, scoring six tries which all came with him ni the 15 shirt except for his sides home win over Racing Métro. González Amorosino stands a very good chance of winning the award for fullback of the year in the Top 14 and is highly likely to be used by Argentina in this position. He has played 14 tests and scored four tries for Argentina since his test debut vs Chile in December 2007.

Martín Bustos Moyano was left out of the World Cup squad due to carrying a minor injury during the lead up and because the coaches considered his skills to not be of the same level as other contenders. He is an accomplished player both as a winger and a goalkicker but is more famous because of the latter as he got Montpellier into the Top 14 Final last season, the first in the clubs history. The 26 year old has been used in all of the back-three positions by Montpellier and could, indeed, do the same for Argentina. He has only won one international cap, vs Chile in 2008 but his club career tells a different story altogether. He has played more rugby than any of the four other players, due to not playing in New Zealand 2011. This season Bustos Moyano has played 20 Top 14 matches, scoring 197 points including three tries. He has also played five Heineken Cup matches this season, scoring one try.    

Gonzalo Camacho is a player on form in England. Yesterday he was nominated for the award of Game Changer of the season in the Aviva Premiership. He was nominated alongside two other players,  making him one of the top three Game Changers in England and he stands a great chance of winning since the other two are from Sale Sharks, a club that has not impressed this season. The Exeter Chiefs winger has played 14 matches this season in the Aviva Premiership, scoring two tries - against London Irish and Northampton. Camacho has proven to be an 80 minute performer having only been replaced once all season and he has started every match that he played in for the Chiefs. He has also played four Amlin Challenge Cup matches this season and last season scored the winning try for the Harlequins in the final vs Stade Français. The 27 year old has thus far played 11 tests for Argentina, scoring four tries.

Juan Imhoff was an amateur but made the World Cup squad based on his performances for Los Pampas XV in the 2011 Vodacom Cup. His rise is an example of how far one can go in such a short amount of time. Imhoff is a speedster comparable perhaps to Wales´ Shane Williams in that he is small, but runs sharp lines and is difficult to stop. Racing Métro signed Imhoff as a Medical Joker as the club was missing players to injury but in no time he was able to break into the starting XV and has since been there permanently, scoring some great tries and regularly finding space. His first try, vs the Cardiff Blues has been followed by other great tries, the latest being vs Castres in early April. This season Imhoff has scored three tries in the Heineken Cup and three in the Top 14. He has played 18 matches this season for the Parisian club, starting thirteen times on the left wing, four times at fullback and coming into play once from the bench. Despite being a debutant he is a serious contender for the Top 14´s team of the year. Imhoff has played eight tests for Argentina, scoring nine tries. He is certain to be Argentina´s starting left winger this year and beyond as he is only 23 years old.

Could some play out of position?

Yes. Of the five players four have been used out of position for the English or French clubs. Agulla has played, on occassion at outside centre for Leicester and previously was used, at times, by Brive at fullback. Bustos Moyano has played on both wings and fullback for Montpellier while González Amorosino has been the clubs fullback to devastating effect this season. Imhoff was used at fullback but should be considered a specialist winger who can, if necessary, play fullback. 

Goalkicker?

Argentina´s weakness in recent years has been its goalkicking which was particularly clear in Los Pumas´ 13-9 loss to England in Rugby World Cup 2011. Neither Felipe Contepomi nor Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga was able to find the posts that evening in Dunedin and it cost Argentina victory. Argentina also had Santiago Fernández in the starting lineup and Marcelo Bosch was a first half replacement for Gonzalo Tiesi. Both players have been used, at times, to kick goals for their French clubs and have also kicked goals for Argentina. Neither player, however, is a reliable enough option and when both have played for Argentina outside Juan Martín Hernández the goalkicker has always been el Mago. 

Hernández is a better goalkicking option than Rodríguez Gurruchaga, Fernández or Bosch but not notably better. As such, an alternative goalkicker could well be the answer. In close matches goalkicking usually has a lot to do with who wins and who loses, Argentina were on the losing side in Dunedin for this reason. Should Argentina wish to field its best goalkicker then the player to look to would be Martín Bustos Moyano. The Montpellier goalkicker was one of the finds of the 2010-2011 season. His goalkicking accounted for 16 points in Montpellier´s 26-25 win over Racing Métro in the 2011 Top 14 Semi Final in Marseilles. His debut season saw the Córdoba winger score 283 points which made him the seasons third highest points scorer and the leading non-Frenchman. In the current season he has thus far scored 192 points underlining his crendentials as a goalkicker for Los Pumas.  

Could all five play together?

Yes it is indeed a possibility that may well have passed through the mind of Santiago Phelan. If he wanted to field them all it could happen with four starting and a fifth playing on the bench. Gonzalo Tiesi is currently in Pensacola, Florida training hard to return for Argentina this June. The Stade Français centre has only played two matches for the club this season due to injury. His spot could indeed be underthreat from not only Marcelo Bosch, who filled the void very well at the World Cup, but also Horacio Agulla who merits a starting place due to his form. This could see him move to the midfield. With González Amorosino appearing certain for the 15 shirt and Imhoff for the 11 shirt this would mean either Bustos Moyano or Camacho would play in the 14 shirt. If goalkicking is to be a true motivating factor in selection then Bustos Moyano should indeed start , probably, two out of the three June test matches.

The option of having such a lineup would work into the hands of Tati Phelan who has previously gone for the option of selecting a bench with only two back so that he could have the option of two props in he reserves. Should he indeed have Agulla at 13 and Amorosino at 15 then the need for an outside back reserve would appear to be nil. Argentina´s other players can more than make up for what is missing. Should Martín Rodríguez Gurruchaga play 12 for Argentina like he has been for Stade Français all season then he could certainly be moved to 13 or 15 if need be. A player like Bosch would be the ideal number 22 in this situation as he has played 10, 12, 13 and 15 for Biarritz during his career with the club. 

Gonzalo Camacho gives Exeter good start but the Chiefs fall short

Argentine winger, Gonzalo Camacho had a slow start to the season and took until round 19 to score his first try for the Exeter Chiefs. But after such a long wait for his first try, Camacho had now scored two in three matches as he went over for the first try of the match vs the Northampton Saints at Sandy Park on Sunday. Camacho showed his speed and agility to get past to get past the first tackler and then after going down together with two other defenders he had the presence to get up and dive over for the try. Despite being tackled, Northampton had failed to secure him on the ground, allowing him to score the five pointer.  

The match was a key game as it determined which of the two clubs would go into the final round of the Aviva Premiership in the Top Four. With the win, Northampton now appear certain to join Harlequins, Leceister and Saracens in the Semi Finals. The bonus point loss was not a sad day for Exeter, however, as the club in just its second season of top flight rugby has guaranteed itself an appearance in next seasons Heineken Cup as the club  is secure in the top six regardless of what happens in the final round of play.

Newcastle Falcons 3-9 Saracens

Several months ago the bottom of the table Newcastle Falcons would have been happy to host the reigning champions, Saracens, and come away with a bonus point loss. Considering the form of the Falcons recently and the teams high chances of being relegated the team could only feel disappointed in losing by six points to the London based side. But the Falcons still have one final chance, in the final round vs second from the bottom London Wasps. The loser of the match will officially be relegated. Saracens fielded two players from the Americas in the match with USA Eagles fullback, Chris Wyles playing at outside centre and the Argentine-Italian prop, Carlos Nieto coming into the match as a second half replacement. 

Gloucester 19-24 Sale Sharks

The miserable season from Gloucester continues as the team lost another home match and dropped to eighth position in the standings. With it the clubs chances of qualigfying for the 2012-2013 Heineken Cup have  all but ended as the team, together with Bath, sits five points behind the Sale Sharks in sixth position. A miracle will need to occur for either Gloucester or Bath to qualify in place of Sale. 

Bath 17-12 London Wasps

The London Wasps had a golden opportunity to secure the clubs survival in the Aviva Premiership and got off to a great start as three Nicky Robinson penalties put the Wasps ahead 9-0. Bath then took control of the match scoring all three tries of the contest to complete a victory. USA Eagles centre, Paul Emerick did not play as he continues his recovery from a minor injury. 

Worcester Warriors 16-25 London Irish Exiles

Two teams out of contention for a place in next seasons Heineken Cup played in what was really a match for nothing at Sixways Stadium in Worcester. The win for the Exiles was enjoyed by the players but they are really just looking forward to start again for the 2012-2013 season. Canadian World Cup secondrower, Jebb Sinclair did not feature for London Irish.

Harlequins 33-43 Leicester Tigers

Another match to underline why the Leicester Tigers are the dominant force in English rugby this season. The club, since reciving its players back from World Cup duty has been far too good for opponents. Last week the club knocked over the Northampton Saints in Northampton and this week the Tigers were too good for the competition leaders, the Harlequins at the clubs home ground in London. The Quins had been leading 33-26 after 50 minutes but the Tigers stayed switched on and won another match without too many issues. The match features three players certain to be involved in Argentina´s international season starting in June. Horacio Agulla played on the right wing and Marcos Ayerza at loosehead prop with both players playing the full 80 minutes. Tomas Vallejos Cinalli played in the secondrow for the Harlequins, coming off the bench in the 67th minute. The Argentine-Italian prop, Martín Castrogiovanni also featured, as a 54th mionute replacement for the Tigers.

Exeter Chiefs 15-18 Northampton Saints

The Chiefs and Saints swap positions in the standings after the visitors completed a three point win at Sandy Park in Sunday´s only match. Both sides are certain to compete in the 2012-2013 Heineken Cup but only one of the two will be in this seasons Aviva Premiership Semi Finals. It is a bitter-sweet scenario for Pumas supporters as if the Chiefs fail to make the Semi Finals it guarantees the avaliability of the clubs two Argentine backs for all thee internationals this coming June. The sides two players are certain to feature with Ignacio Mieres being, arguably the find of the season in the Aviva Premiership, having made the Exeter flyhalf postion his own and done a lot to get the team to where it is now. He started at flyhalf, playing the full 80 minutes and scored five points: one penalty and one conversion. He was joined on the scorers sheet by Gonzalo Camacho, with the Argentine World Cup winger scoring his second try of the season. USA secondrower, Samu Manoa did not feature for the Saints.

Gonzalo Camacho seems to be a hot topic at the moment following his try last weekend in the Aviva Premiership. A reader of Argentina2023 put in a request to see his tackle vs England at Rugby World Cup 2011. The request was made in the comments section of his tackle on Richie McCaw in the World Cup Quarter Final at Eden Park. The tackle on McCaw was such a good one because it showed how technique is more important than size as an 82KG winger was able to get under and force back a 106KG backrower. It was a tackle that viewers have come to expect from Camacho but it was so impressive because of who it was performed against. His tackling technique is one that coaches use to try to get their players hitting the player correctly to maximize force using a straight back with the power coming through from the legs in combination with the shoulder contact.

His tackle three weeks earlier, however in the first match of the World Cup for Argentina and England was a tackle of a different variety. It was penalized for the reason that Camacho turned the player over while in the air. It was not a yellow card offence, however, as Camacho had control over where Foden landed.

Gonzalo Camacho is a man playing well for the Exeter Chiefs in England. Despite England´s controversial rule of limiting the number of foreigners in the starting lineup for teams in the Aviva Premiership, the Pumas pair of Camacho and flyhalf Ignacio Mieres have both been first choice players for the club. The pair have been regulars for the South-Western English club and have seen the team become increasingly competitive as it is to play in this weekends Amlin Challegne Cup at the Quarter Finals stage and sits comfortably in fifth place  in the Aviva Premiership. The club is virtually guaranteed of an historical place in next seasons Heineken Cup while traditional powerhouses are to miss out. Behind the Chiefs are sides who have been strong in England, and Europe over the past decade such as as Bath, Gloucester, London Wasps, Newcastle Falcons, Sale Sharks and this past weekends victims, London Irish. 

Exeter´s seven point win came with both Mieres and Camacho contributing to the scoring. Mieres did not have the best afternoons but, nevertheless, landed some goals. Camacho scored his first try for the club since his Post-World Cup arrival. It could not have come at a better time as Camacho´s Pumas number 14 shirt is under threat from the well performing pair of Juan Imhoff and Martín Bustos Moyano. Both alongside established players Horacio Agulla and Lucas González Amorosino have been playing very well in Europe this season. It gives Argentina plenty of options and Camacho´s try this past weekend will have eased the pressure being put on him by other Argentine outside backs.

The Rugby Championship Players To Watch - Gonzalo Camacho

27 year old winger, Gonzalo Camacho is a player to watch out for this year for Los Pumas. The Exeter Chiefs winger has been a starter for the Aviva Premiership team all season and carries the misleading statistic of not scoring a try at all for the club since his arrival following Rugby World Cup 2011. The Chiefs signed him in what was a major coup for the club considered as big one of the most likely for relegation to the second division. His arrival, however, has proven to be good for him and for the club. Despite only having scored one try thus far he has been a constant threat in attack and despite his small stature he has been like a brick wall in defence.

The rise of Camacho into Los Pumas was no easy road. As an amateur player in Buenos Aires his chance came while playing Rugby Sevens for his country. He had come through the Argentine system and emerged as a Pumas player at the right time - just as the IRB were waking up to the need to help the UAR go professional. It took Argentina´s performance at Rugby World Cup 2007 to alert the sports gobal governing body and Gonzalo Camacho was a young player who was quickly selected  and prepared by the PladAR system. While the system was coming together, Camacho made his test debut, scoring two tries vs Uruguay in March 2008. he earned his second test cap latter that year and scored a try vs Chile. His big break, however, did not come in 2008 but the following year and from Sevens rugby rather than rugby union. Camacho was in Argentina´s Sevens team and was a key player. He was a part of the team that finished second in the 2009 World Cup in Dubai. His performances had attracted the interests of scouts and English side, the Harlequins signed him no a two year deal starting in August 2009. 

Camacho evades Chris Robshaw

With Argentina missing players to injury and the form of some not being what it perhaps should have been, Santiago Phelan, named Camacho in his squad for the June 2009 internationals vs England. Camacho started both tests on the right wing, scoring a try in the home match at Salta. The try was a finalist for the IRB Try of the year. It underlined his potential as a player who could go on to start for Argentina at the World Cup. It also saw him give English rugby fans an indication of his abilities. Two months after helping Argentina to a test victory he was in London with the Harlequins. He was expected to start on the wing for Argentina in the November 2009 international tour of England, Wales and Scotland but he missed out due to injury. He also missed Argentina´s home series in June 2010 and had to wait until November 2010 to make his return to the international stage. He started vs Italy and France and put in solid performances to underline his credentials.

Camacho lifts the Amlin Challenge Cup

After seeing out his two year deal, Camacho was signed by Exeter despite the Harlequins eagerness to resign the Pumas winger. He played for the Harlequins for two seasons, with the 2010-2011 season being his better one as he recieved significantly more game time and had also secured the Pumas 14 shirt as his own. Camacho wrote his name in the history books in his final match for the club as he scored the only try of the 2011 Amlin Challenge Cup Final to give the London side a championship title, defeating Paris´ Stade Français. His impressive season cemented his place in the starting XV for Argentina for World Cup year and he, indeed, went on to be the teams starting right winger in Los Pumas´ key matches as he started all three crunch matches - vs England and Scotland in the group phase and vs New Zealand in the Quarter Final.   

Camacho tackles Ben Foden

Despite not scoring a try at the World Cup, Camacho was an important player for Los Pumas. It was his defence that seemed to leave the biggest impression as he showed the world that it does not take a big mane to put in a big tackle. His tackles vs England´s Ben Foden and New Zealand´s Richie McCaw were amongst the best of the tournament. He was able to shut down defences and see to it that Argentina would not be leaking tries down his side of the field. Teams tried hard to attack him but were unable to as he was able to keep big name players from England, Scotland and New Zealand at bay. 

His defence may well be what works out for him this year as Camacho´s place in Argentina´s starting XV is being challenged by the performances of Martín Bustos Moyano and Juan Imhoff in France and regular Pumas left winger, Horacio Agulla in England. All players are certain to feature for their country this year with Argentina having a much larger schedule that in previous years. The form and depth of Pumas wingers could well give the team an edge compared to Argentine teams of the past.

Leicester Tigers 43-13 Worcester Warriors

The Tigers´ crushing home win sees the sides continued rise up the standings to now occupy second place together with the reigning champions, Saracens. The two sides sit six points behind the leaders, the Harlequins but have all but guaranteed their places in the Aviva Premiership play-off´s as it will take a miracle for any of them to finish lower than fourth. The three will likely be joined by the Northampton Saints with the Exeter Chiefs being the only other side that could make the final four. Leicester´s impressive home win featured the Argentine frontrow duo of Marcos Ayerza at loosehead prop and the Argentine-Italian, Martín Castrogiovanni at tighthead prop. Winger, Horacio Agulla was rested.



Newcastle Falcons 22-19 Sale Sharks

The forth win of this seasons Aviva Premiership for Newcastle was one of immense celebration as England´s northern most premiership club continues to fight hard to avoid relegation to England´s second division. It places immense pressure on the traditional powerhouses, the London Wasps who face te realistic, and unthinkable, possibility of finishing last in the Aviva Premiership and therefore being relegated. Sale´s prerformance continues the clubs dreadful run whcih has seen the team go from pushing for a semi finals sopt to now be twelve points behind the Exeter Chiefs. Joaquin Tuculet did not feature for Sale. 

Exeter Chiefs 18-11 London Irish 

The Exeter Chiefs continue to tear up the script as one of the favorites for the wooden spoon are marching on to a first ever appearance in the Heineken Cup and possibly also an historical appearance in the Aviva Premiership Semi Finals. At the helm of Exeter´s victory was the inform Ignacio Mieres with the Argentine flyhalf landing two penalties and a conversion as he continues to be one of the surprze packages of the season. Los Pumas´ first coice right winger, Gonzalo Camacho also got on the scoreboard as he scored his first try for the club since his post-World Cup arrival. 

Saracens 19-24 Harlequins

A world record crowd for a regular season club rugby match gathered at the home of English Soccer, Wembley as 83,761 spectators attended the all-London clash between last seasons English Champions, Saracens and last seasons Amlin Challenge Cup winners, Harlequins. It was also a top of the table match with the home side entering the match in second place and the visitors leading the Premiership standings. Both teams fielded players from the Americas with USA fullback, Chris Wyles continuning his role as the teams leading inside centre as he played the full 80 minutes and the Argentine-Italian prop, Carlos Nieto starting in the pack at tighthead prop and lasting 49 minutes.
